As a postpartum nurse, Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS), birth doula, and mom of three, I know firsthand how overwhelming it can be to prepare for the arrival of your little one. One of the best ways to feel more in control is by having your hospital bag packed with all the essentials you’ll need for those first few days postpartum. Trust me, once your baby arrives, the last thing you want to worry about is whether you forgot something important at home!
To help make things easier, I’ve put together a list of must-haves for your hospital bag, based on my experience in the field and my personal journeys as a mom. Let’s go through each item, and I’ll explain why you’ll be grateful to have these essentials by your side!
1. Postpartum Active Maternity Leggings
Comfort is key postpartum, and having a pair of postpartum active maternity leggings will be a lifesaver. These leggings are designed to offer support to your postpartum belly without being too tight. After birth, your body will need comfort and gentle compression to support healing, and these leggings do just that. They’re also great for giving you mobility while still feeling put-together!
2. Amazon Essentials Pajamas
When you’re recovering from delivery, whether it’s a vaginal birth or a C-section, having soft, breathable pajamas is essential. Look for something easy to nurse in, like a button-down style, and make sure they’re cozy enough to sleep in at the hospital. The room can sometimes feel cold, and you'll want something that makes you feel comfortable and warm.
3. Hatch Portable Sound Machine
Hospitals are full of noises, from beeping machines to other babies crying. A portable sound machine like the Hatch is a great way to create a soothing environment for both you and your baby. White noise can help your newborn sleep better and also drown out any noises that might disturb your rest.
4. Portable Night Light
Hospital lighting can be harsh, and having a portable night light helps create a calm atmosphere during those middle-of-the-night feedings or diaper changes. It’s perfect for not waking your partner or nurses while still giving you enough light to see what you're doing.
5. High-Waisted Panties
If you’ve had a C-section, high-waisted panties will be your best friend. They keep pressure off your incision while still offering gentle support to your abdomen. Even if you had a vaginal delivery, you’ll appreciate the comfort and ease of movement they offer. Pack a couple of pairs—you’ll be living in them for weeks after birth!
6. Hofish Nursing Bra
A comfortable nursing bra is a must in your hospital bag, especially when your milk comes in. Look for something soft, stretchy, and without underwire for maximum comfort. The Hofish Nursing Bra is a great option for easy breastfeeding access and gentle support.
7. Gentle Hair Ties
Postpartum hair loss is real, but even in those first few days, your hair might feel greasy or just get in the way. Pack a few gentle hair ties that won’t pull or cause breakage to keep your hair up and out of your face during labor and those initial days with your baby.
8. Phone Charger
A phone charger with an extra-long cord is something you might not think of right away, but trust me—you’ll need it! Hospital outlets are often far from the bed, and between updating family, taking baby photos, and checking in on social media, your phone will be your lifeline during the long hours of recovery.
9. Glossier Lotion & Balm
Hospitals can be notoriously dry, and you’ll want to keep your skin hydrated. Pack a good lotion and balm (like Glossier's) to keep your hands, face, and lips moisturized. You’ll be washing your hands frequently, so having something soothing on hand will be a nice comfort.
10. Fuzzy Socks
Hospital floors are cold! Pack a pair of fuzzy socks to keep your feet warm, especially during labor or while resting in bed. Many moms swear by cozy socks for that extra bit of comfort during their hospital stay.
11. Stroller Fan
While you won’t need a stroller just yet, a stroller fan can double as a portable fan to keep you cool during labor or when the hospital room feels stuffy. Labor can get hot and exhausting, and having a little airflow might help you feel more comfortable.
12. Fuzzy Blanket
Hospital blankets aren’t always the warmest or softest, so bringing your own fuzzy blanket can make you feel more at home. It's a small comfort that can go a long way in helping you relax and feel cozy while you rest and recover.
13. Pacifiers
While some hospitals provide them, it’s always a good idea to bring your own pacifiers, especially if you have a specific brand you’d like to use. Pacifiers can help soothe your newborn and give you a few moments of peace. One of my favorite for breastfeeding or not babies is the Avent pacifier.
14. Motherlove Nipple Cream
Breastfeeding can take some time to get used to, and sore nipples are common in the early days. Motherlove Nipple Cream is a natural, soothing cream that helps protect and heal cracked nipples. You’ll want this handy from day one if you plan to breastfeed.
15. Gum
Labor is long, and your mouth can get dry, especially if you can’t eat or drink during the process. Packing gum will keep your mouth feeling fresh and help pass the time during labor or in between feedings.
16. Reusable Breast Pads
Once your milk comes in, you might experience some leakage. Reusable breast pads are a great eco-friendly option to help you stay dry and comfortable. Make sure you pack a few pairs so you can change them out as needed.
17. Fuzzy Slippers
When you're walking around your hospital room or heading to the bathroom, you’ll want something cozy on your feet. Fuzzy slippers provide warmth, comfort, and easy movement without needing to wear shoes.
18. Silverettes
Silverettes are small, reusable silver cups that help heal sore or cracked nipples from breastfeeding. They're natural and help reduce irritation and inflammation without the need for creams. A must-have if you're planning to breastfeed!
19. Puffer Bag
A puffer bag is not only stylish but also functional for carrying your essentials, such as snacks, toiletries, or even baby items. It's lightweight, and you’ll be thankful for having an extra bag to keep your things organized in the hospital room.
20. Upside Down Peri Bottle
Postpartum care includes a lot of focus on healing, and using an upside-down peri bottle will make your bathroom trips much more comfortable. Whether you've had stitches or are dealing with swelling, a peri bottle helps with hygiene and healing after birth.
21. Motherlove Sitz Bath Spray
This postpartum soothing spray is a lifesaver! I recommend using it directly on a pad or your perineal area for cooling comfort after childbirth. Another tip I love is adding it to your peri bottle with warm water for a gentle, soothing wash during recovery. It’s been a game-changer for me postpartum!
Knowledge is power, especially during the postpartum period. The Preparing for Postpartum Guide can provide you with helpful tips and information on what to expect during your recovery. It’s a great resource to have on hand for any questions you might have while in the hospital and back at home with your baby.
24. Frida Mom Disposable Postpartum Underwear
Frida Mom disposable postpartum underwear are a must-have for new moms. They offer a comfortable, high-waisted fit that gently supports the abdomen, especially after a cesarean or vaginal birth. Made with breathable, stretchy fabric, they help hold postpartum pads securely in place while promoting air circulation for faster healing. Plus, being disposable makes them incredibly convenient during the recovery period, so there’s no need to worry about laundry. These features make them perfect for the early postpartum days when comfort and ease are essential.
Final Thoughts
Packing your hospital bag is an important step in preparing for your baby’s arrival. By including these essentials, you’ll be better equipped for the unexpected and more comfortable during your hospital stay. As a mom of three and a professional in the field, these are my top recommendations for a smooth, supported, and comfortable postpartum experience.
Remember: Comfort, healing, and support are key to feeling good after delivery. Make sure your bag reflects that!
